Brother Mickey McGrath released a new image depicting St. Phoebe. Read his words on this project below:
"I was delighted to receive this commission to create an image of St. Phoebe, a woman I knew very little about other than the fact that she is the Patron Saint of Women Deacons. When I learned that Phoebe is depicted in traditional iconography as holding a scroll - and that she did not wear a stole as we see being worn by deacons today - it led me to imagine her with an open scroll with the words from St. Paul's letter to the Romans written on it: "Receive her in the Lord." I felt it important to depict St. Phoebe as a strong and determined woman with the wisdom of years symbolized by her grey-streaked hair. I chose the colors she is wearing for their gentle strength and for their subtle suggestions of the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent - times of contemplative hope and welcoming the new."
