In our Gospel reading this weekend, after an active time of ministering to large numbers of people, to the point of not even having the time to eat, Jesus instructs the apostles to go away by themselves to someplace secluded for rest. Unfortunately, people learned of their destination and were there when they arrived, no rest for the weary.
At the same time, it’s important for us to note this instruction from Jesus, and perhaps make a better plan than the apostles to retreat someplace where we can truly find rest. In our day and age, this requires some intentionality, especially to go away for an extended period.
A former boss of mine had a very helpful way of thinking about this, and he would remind us whenever we had some upcoming vacation. He would have us make three lists:
1) What needs to get done before I leave,
2) What can be delegated to someone else,
3) What can wait until I get back.
Doing this work helped make the time away relaxing, and there was no need to feel like I needed to check in, I could really disconnect, which is what was required.
I know that for many this type of respite is not possible because of various life circumstances, but I hope that all of us, if even for just a day or two, can take Jesus’ instruction to heart, find a place and time for seclusion and rest, and take a break from the grind of our daily lives.
