Access to real food is foundational to climbing out of poverty. Without proper nutrition, there is little hope of bettering the lives of those experiencing homelessness or living in extreme poverty. Urban Ministries Durham offers three free meals per day, 365 days per year, to anyone hungry. Each year they serve over 250,000 meals. About half of those meals go to guests staying in the UMD Community Shelter on our campus. The other half feed unsheltered homeless and extremely low-resource neighbors in Durham.
Once a month, Holy Infant partners with UMD to provide a spaghetti shelter dinner. Our parishioners and volunteers coordinate the donation of food to prepare the meal and share those resources with the team at UMD. These monthly donations are a small way Holy Infant makes a commitment to better the lives of brothers and sisters in Durham.
Pope Francis shares, "You pray for the hungry. And then you feed them. That's how prayer works."
April's shelter dinner donations are due Easter weekend. If you have not already, please consider signing up to donate to this meaningful work using the link below. Donations should be brought to mass and dropped off before 1 pm on Sunday, April 9th.
