Human trafficking remains a heartbreaking reality in our world today, and North Carolina continues to rank among the top 10 states in the nation for reported cases.
Traffickers often use coercion and control to exploit their victims. In some cases, abortion services have been misused by traffickers as a means to maintain control, further deepening the cycle of abuse. Identifying victims in healthcare settings—including abortion clinics—can be especially challenging. That’s why training is critical: it equips us to recognize red flags, respond safely, and take meaningful steps to protect the vulnerable.
To help us better understand and respond to this crisis, the North Carolina Human Trafficking Commission connected with Niki Miller, COO of Shield NC (www.shieldnc.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to combating trafficking in our state. Niki will lead a special training session covering:
Clear definitions of human trafficking
Common myths and realities
Warning signs and red flags to watch for
Real-life examples of what you might encounter
How to respond without putting yourself—or others—in danger
