The Food Justice Garden is on track to harvest more than 4,000 pounds by the end of 2020, a feat made possible in part by many hands and our bees working in the garden.
At this time last year, volunteers had harvested and donated about 2,100 pounds of food. By the end of September 2020, the garden has produced 3,780 pounds.
Food Justice Garden coordinator Joanie Novak says that the number of volunteers in the garden makes a huge difference in output, whether it’s parishioners or bees.
“In years when we’ve had little rain, there were not enough volunteers to water the garden,” she said. “And that makes a difference.”
This year’s bounty is made possible by a combination of factors: extra rain, more volunteers and our busy bees from
Buddha Bee Apiary.
Garden workdays are on Tuesday and Saturday mornings starting at around 8 a.m. Families with children are welcome to volunteer together. There’s something for everyone to do. Currently, volunteers are harvesting the remaining summer produce and preparing and planting beds with fall crops.
