Congratulations on your engagement! Please schedule a meeting with the Director of Music, Jeff Rice BEFORE completing the Wedding Liturgy Planning Form. If you have any questions or concerns during this process, please reach out over email.
Musicians & Fees
The Director of Music will assist you with planning the music, securing a cantor and other musicians if desired, and will be present to lead music for your wedding. You are contracting directly with the Director of Music for these services and the fee is $200. This is paid directly to the Director of Music.
If you're having a full Mass, you must also have a cantor. Cantors are optional for matrimony outside of Mass (Liturgy of the Word only). The Director of Music can secure a cantor for you. The fee is $150, paid directly to the cantor. If you have a friend or family member who is qualified and would like to serve as a cantor, that can also be arranged.
Any additional musicians (instruments, additional singers) can be hired for a fee of $150. Qualified musicians who are friends or family can assist with permission of the Director of Music.
Guidelines for Selecting Music
Paragraph #30 in the Introduction to the Order of Celebrating Matrimony provides for the following instruction regarding music:
The chants to be sung during the Rite of Marriage should be appropriate and should express the faith of the Church, with attention paid to the importance of the Responsorial Psalm within the Liturgy of the Word. What is said concerning the chants applies also to the selection of other musical works.
Therefore, please keep in mind the following…
† Any sung music must be Christian in nature, ie, “express the faith of the Church”
† Instrumental music may not be derived from a secular song, show tune, opera, film score, etc.
† These are not judgements of style, but association. Many different styles of music can be considered.
Examples of appropropriate music are listed below, click on the link to listen. This is not an exclusive list, only some suggestions.
How the music sounds will be limited by the type and number of musicians. Almost anything is possible, it’s just a matter of resources. The Director of Music will work with you to create the music you envision as much as possible with the resources you’re able to invest.
Please enter your music selections as part of completing the Wedding Liturgy Planning Form at least 6 weeks before your wedding date. You'll receive a copy of the form in your email. If you want to hire additional musicians, this should be decided upon as soon as possible!
